The study-abroad timeline: when to start

A realistic, month-by-month plan counting back from the day you want to fly.

The single biggest avoidable mistake we see is starting late. Universities have deadlines, scholarships close early, and visa processing takes time. Here is a realistic timeline, counting backwards from when you want to fly.

Phase by phase

  1. 12+ months out: Research countries and courses, and take IELTS/PTE early so the score is ready.
  2. 8–10 months: Shortlist universities, prepare your SOP and documents, and apply.
  3. 5–7 months: Accept your offer and arrange funds — savings, loan and/or GIC.
  4. 3–4 months: Submit a clean visa application and respond quickly to any requests.
  5. Departure: Pre-departure, accommodation, forex and your first week sorted.
Start earlier than feels necessary
If you want a Fall (September) intake, serious work should begin the previous year. Early applicants get the best course choices, more scholarship options and calmer visa timelines.
