Intakes explained: Fall, Winter, Summer

What an intake is, how the three differ, and how to pick the right one.

“Intake” simply means the point in the year when a university starts new students. Most countries have two or three, and choosing the right one affects your course options, scholarships and visa timeline.

The three intakes

Fall (around September) is the main intake — the widest choice of courses and the most scholarships. Winter (around January) is a strong second option with good availability. Summer (around May) is smaller and offered for limited programs.

Which should you pick?

If you can be ready in time, Fall gives you the most options. If not, Winter is a perfectly good route rather than waiting a whole year. The key is to work backwards from the intake and start early (see our timeline guide).

Dates vary by country and university
September/January/May are typical, but exact start dates and application deadlines differ. Confirm them for your specific universities.
