Scholarships Indian students should know about

The main types of funding, how to actually win one, and the scams to avoid.

Studying abroad is a big investment — and more of it can be funded than most families realise. Scholarships rarely cover everything, but even a partial award meaningfully lowers the cost. Here are the main types and how to actually land one.

Types of funding to look for

  • Merit scholarships — for strong academics, tests or achievements
  • University bursaries & tuition waivers — often automatic with your offer
  • Need-based aid — for families with limited income
  • Government & external scholarships — national schemes and private trusts
  • Assistantships — teaching/research roles that waive fees (mainly postgraduate)

How to actually win one

  • Start early — many deadlines fall months before the intake
  • Apply widely — treat each scholarship as its own small application
  • Keep your academics and test scores strong — they're the first filter
  • Write a focused, specific essay for each — not one generic copy
  • Never miss a deadline — most have zero flexibility
Watch for scholarship scams
No genuine scholarship asks you to pay a fee to ‘release’ it or guarantees an award for money. If someone promises a guaranteed scholarship for an upfront payment, walk away.
