Canada Study Permit 2026: a step-by-step guide for Indian students

Eligibility, documents, proof of funds, timelines and the mistakes that cause refusals — explained simply.

A Canadian study permit is the document that lets you study at a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada. For students in Punjab and across India, it is the single most important step in the journey — and the one where small mistakes cause big delays. Here is an honest, plain-English walkthrough of how it works.

Who can apply

To be eligible you generally need a letter of acceptance from a DLI, enough money to pay your tuition and living costs and support yourself, a clean background, and to be in good health (a medical exam may be required). You must also satisfy the visa officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay unless you later qualify to stay on.

Documents you will usually need

  • A valid passport
  • Letter of acceptance from your college or university
  • Proof of funds (tuition, living expenses and travel)
  • Academic transcripts and certificates
  • Language test results (such as IELTS or PTE)
  • A statement of purpose explaining your study plan
  • Passport-size photographs and, if needed, a medical exam and police clearance

Proof of funds

This is where many applications fall down. You need to show you can genuinely pay for your first year of tuition plus living costs, and that the money is real and traceable. Officers look closely at where funds came from. The exact amount required is set by IRCC and is updated periodically, so check the current figure rather than relying on an old number.

The application, step by step

  • Get accepted — secure your letter of acceptance from a DLI.
  • Gather documents — funds, transcripts, language results, statement of purpose.
  • Apply online — complete the study permit application and pay the fees.
  • Give biometrics — at your nearest visa application centre.
  • Wait and respond — processing times vary by season; respond quickly if more information is requested.

Common reasons study permits get refused

The most frequent reasons are weak or unclear proof of funds, a statement of purpose that does not explain your choice of course and country, a study plan that does not match your past education, and incomplete documents. Almost all of these are avoidable with careful preparation.
