For years, most students from Punjab applied to Canada through the Student Direct Stream. You paid a year's tuition, bought a GIC, held a decent IELTS band, and often had a decision in about three weeks. That route no longer exists.
IRCC discontinued the Student Direct Stream on 8 November 2024. Every applicant now files through the regular study permit stream. If your plan was built on how SDS used to work, it needs rebuilding — here is what actually changed and what to do about it.
What the regular stream means in practice
- ✓Processing is slower. Expect roughly eight to twelve weeks rather than the old three-week turnaround.
- ✓The financial review is fuller. SDS let a GIC stand in for a deeper look at your finances. Now the source and history of your money is examined properly.
- ✓There is no fast lane to buy. Paying tuition upfront and holding a GIC no longer purchases speed — though both still help your file.
- ✓Documentation matters more than format. The old checklist mentality is exactly what gets files refused now.
Is a GIC still required?
Strictly, no. The GIC was an SDS requirement, and SDS is gone. In practice most strong applications still include one, because it is the cleanest possible evidence that a year of living costs exists and is committed. You can instead show bank balances, fixed deposits or a sanctioned education loan — but then the burden shifts to you to prove where that money came from. We cover the options in detail in our proof of funds guide.
How much money you must show
Since 1 September 2025 the minimum living-cost requirement for a single applicant is CAD 22,895, and this is on top of first-year tuition and travel. Quebec sets its own figure — CAD 24,617 for applications from 1 January 2026. Add dependants and the requirement rises.
The number itself is the easy part. What refuses files is a balance that appeared recently with no explanation. Six months of visible, explainable history is worth more than a larger sum deposited last week.
The Provincial Attestation Letter
Most applicants still need a PAL or TAL from the province where they will study, and the institution issues it against a provincial allocation. There is one significant exception from 1 January 2026: master's and doctoral students at public designated learning institutions no longer need one. We have written that up separately in who still needs a PAL in 2026.
The application, step by step
- ✓Secure an offer from a designated learning institution (DLI)
- ✓Obtain your PAL or TAL, unless you fall under the graduate exemption
- ✓Arrange proof of funds — GIC, bank evidence, or a sanctioned loan
- ✓Pay tuition or the required deposit and keep the receipt
- ✓Complete the medical examination with a panel physician
- ✓Submit the online application with your SOP and supporting documents
- ✓Give biometrics within the deadline
- ✓Wait — and do not make large unexplained deposits while the file is in process
Plan your timeline backwards
With eight to twelve weeks of processing plus medicals, biometrics and travel, a September intake realistically needs the visa filed by late May or early June. Working back from there: offer by April, PAL and funds by May, English test by January. Students who file in July for September are gambling, and many lose.
Mistakes that come from old SDS habits
- ✓Assuming a GIC alone proves your finances — it no longer carries that weight on its own
- ✓Filing late because you remember three-week processing
- ✓Ignoring the source-of-funds question because SDS never asked it loudly
- ✓Choosing a college purely because it was on an SDS-friendly list
- ✓Treating the SOP as a formality when it is now doing real work
What has not changed
The fundamentals are the same as they always were. You need a genuine course that follows from your background, money you can actually account for, and a story that holds together. SDS made it possible to pass with a thin file if the boxes were ticked. The regular stream does not.
If your plan was built around SDS, bring it in and we will rebuild it for the current rules — the first assessment is free. Our Canada page has the current partner list and costs.
What replaced the certainty SDS used to give
The honest answer is: nothing. There is no premium lane you can buy into. What you can control is the quality of the file, and under the regular stream that is worth far more than it used to be. Officers now have full discretion to look at everything, so the strongest applications are the ones where every question is answered before it is asked.
Paying tuition upfront: still worth it?
It is no longer required, but it remains one of the most persuasive things in a file. Paying a full year of tuition demonstrates commitment and removes an entire category of doubt about whether you can afford the course. If the money genuinely exists and the institution refunds on visa refusal — check that policy in writing first — it is usually worth doing.
A note on medicals and biometrics
Both are routine but both cause avoidable delays. Complete the medical with an approved panel physician before or immediately after you submit, rather than waiting to be asked, and give biometrics as soon as the letter arrives. Students lose two to three weeks here simply by treating these as afterthoughts.
Do not disturb the file once it is submitted
A large deposit landing in your account while the application is under review invites exactly the question you do not want. If a genuine transaction is unavoidable, keep the documentary proof of its source ready. Consistency between what you submitted and what your accounts show afterwards matters.
If Canada no longer fits
For some profiles, honestly, it does not any more — particularly weaker academic records applying to short college programmes. That is not a reason to give up on studying abroad. The UK's one-year master's often works out cheaper overall, and Australia has clearer work rights. We compare them on our destinations page and in Australia vs Canada. A good consultant should tell you when the answer is a different country.
What a strong regular-stream file looks like
If you want a single mental model: the officer should finish your file without a question left unanswered. That means the money is explained before they wonder, the course is justified before they ask, and the gap is documented before they find it. Everything else is detail.
In practice the files we see approved share the same shape — a course that follows the applicant's own history, six months of clean financial evidence with sources attached, tuition paid or substantially paid, and a statement written in a real human voice that names the specific programme and modules.
